Here are answers to the questions that we are asked most frequently -
When your pool goes green you need to give it a boost of chlorine to kill the algae. For a liner pool this can be done using stabilised chlorine granules or calcium hypochlorite granules (Chlorine Shock). For hard sided above ground pools or in-ground pools calcium hypochlorite (Chlorine Shock) is recommended. DO NOT MIX STABILISED CHLORINE GRANULES AND CALCIUM HYPOCHLORITE GRANULES TOGETHER!!!
The main difference between the two is convenience. Tablets can be placed in a dispenser or skimmer basket to provide a slow release of chlorine into your pool when it is not in use. Granules require manual dosing as and when needed. During the summer it is recommended that you use chlorine tablets as this will provide a constant dose of chlorine. This is essential in hot weather as the sunlight and bathers will reduce the chlorine level.
It is possible that your testing reagent could have been bleached. To find out you need to use a diluted sample. To do this, use a sample that is 50% pool water and 50% tap water. Once you have got a reading double it to work out the chlorine level. If this still doesn't provide a reading use 25% pool water - 75% tap water sample and multiply your reading by four.
Cloudy water is usually caused by poor filtration. To rectify the problem firstly check your filter. If it is ok then use a clarifier to help with the filtration of all the small particles created by the detergents and cosmetics from the bathers. It may be necessary to increase the turnover of the pool water by extending the pump and filter run time.
This is usually the case in hard water areas due to the high levels of calcium in the water. This can be solved by maintaining a correct pH level, and using scale and stain inhibitor.
This only a worry when the chlorine reading is over 10ppm. If this is the case then this can be immediately reduced by using dechlorinator. Otherwise if starved of chlorine the level will come down naturally over time. It is advised that the pool is not used until the level drops below 10ppm. Ideally the chlorine level should be between 1 and 3ppm.
This could be down to your alkalinity level. Your alkalinity level acts as a buffer for your pH. Therefore if your alkalinity level is incorrect then this will allow fluctuations in the pH level. To increase it use alkalinity builder.
